〝旅館街〟には鼻につくツンとしたすえた臭いが充満していた。野良猫の糞尿の臭いがただよう路地には古い旅館が数軒並んでいる。意を決して〝旅館〟と書かれたドアを開けると、待機所のカーテンが開け放たれており、暇を持て余した娼婦たちと目があった。40代後半〜50代の女性が数名、座椅子に腰かけて団扇を扇いでいる。彼女達は突然の来客に驚きもせず、虚ろな眼差しで私を見てきた――。現代までちょんの間が残る南国・高知市の〝玉水新地〟と〝堺町〟。男勝りな土佐女が夜の商売に生きる旅館街を訪ねた。

Several women in their late 40s to 50s are sitting on legless chairs and fanning fans. They weren’t even surprised by the sudden visitor, they just looked at me with empty eyes. “Tamamizu Shinchi” and “Sakaimachi” in Kochi City, a southern country where a small gap remains to this day. A masculine woman visits an inn town that lives on night business.
